The Cost of a Cat
There is only one accessory that is essential but expensive from a cat's equipment: the basket or traveling cage, although you could always buy one from second hand. (In this case, clean well with an adequate disinfectant for cats).
Many times you can acquire free kittens from friends or neighbors, with the condition that you treat them well, or also you can get them at animal shelters with just a small donation.
If what you want is a cat with pedigree for exhibiting, it is evident that you will have to be prepared to spend much more money and to have the commitment of financing the trips and shows as also the costs of the veterinary that are usually very expensive.
In general, the costs of maintenance of a normal domestic cat are modest. The weekly food provision costs the same as a cheap wine at the supermarket. So, there is no excuse for not buying a good and balanced diet, even if it's a bit more expensive, because this way you won't have to complement it with other vitamins and minerals.
Another expense is that of the veterinary which is very high but unavoidable, overall for yearly vaccinations and the periodical revisions.
Other expenditures would be the use of temporary lodges for cats, but this can be avoid by talking with a friend or neighbors with a good disposition.
The fact that cats are the favorite pets for older people with a limited income clearly indicates that the cost for having a cat is not to high at all.
Cat Cares
A last advice: the health of a cat, as also its well being and happiness, depends entirely on its owner, for which the animal has the right of sharing part of his attention and time from the person he lives with.
If you can't do this, its better to forget of having cats.
