Skin Poisoning

Skin Poisoning

Paint, thinners, tar, engine lubricant and many other chemical products cause irritations and burns in the skin. If the cat licks the above mentioned substances, the interior of the mouth

can be burned. If he swallows them, he would suffer a general poisoning. Because of the freedom of felines, they are exposed to hazardous pollution of all kinds, as well as poisons or corrosive substances as for example the decapantes of painting based on caustic soda.

Monitor Possible Shock

Follow the instructions for cleanliness of the skin. If the skin of the cat is spotted with paint, tar or oil of engine:

Do not use decapantes of painting, thinners, natural or synthetic turpentine nor tar after caulking minerals. Neither use biological concentrated detergents.

  1. Using rubber gloves, rub with abundant mineral or vegetable oil the contaminated area in order to separate the skin the strange substance. (If it has hardened, do not try to remove it by rubbing it; cut the lock of hair).
  2. Once the pollutant substance is separated, wash the affected areas with abundant soapy tepid water. Use liquid soaps for hands, detergents for delicate garments, shampoos for children; they are soft and non-irritating. If only a small area is stained for example, a paw – rub it with a towel of plush moistened with vegetable oil. Repeat the operation with new towels as often as necessary until the leg is clean
  3. Rinse well until the last rest of the pollutant substance is eliminated.
  4. When the spotted area is very extensive, use powders of talc or flour besides the vegetable oil for a better absorption of the poison. Remove this mix with a comb of wide ticks, wash the skin with soapy water and rinse them carefully.

If the skin of the cat is contaminated by any product that is not paint, tar, derived of the oil or oil of car:

  1. Wash the contaminated zone with abundant water during at least five minutes.
  2. If the body has contaminated with an alkaline, as the caustic soda, do the previous operation during fifteen minutes as minimum. Put special interest in the zone of the eyes. Be sure that the pits and groins receive much more quantity of water than other parts of the body of easier access.
  3. Using rubber gloves, wash the affected areas with soapy tepid water, a soft detergent (as shampoo for children) or soap for delicate garments.
