Sand

Many cats prefer thin sand, but with some patience; they will get used to any type of sand (even with added perfumes).

Among the recommended ones, there are:

  • Traditional clay based cat litter: must be changed entirely at least two times a week and all solid excrement must be taken out daily with a rake.
  • Scooping/Clumping cat litter: much more absorbent both of liquid and of smells. The whole contents of the cat litter box also needs to be replaced on occasion but not nearly as frequently as the traditional type.
  • Silica gel cat litter: must withdraw the dregs as they appear, but the urine is absorbed by the crystals (and their smell also) during the whole month.

Once the litter box and type of sand is chosen, we have to verify if the cat adapts to see if there is something to be changed or doesn't like the location.

During the first days, it is recommended to check all plants close by because it is possible they might find in these a suitable place to do their needs and scratch and this wont be very hygienic. There also exist covered litter boxes with a top filter to avoid any smell in the house. They are useful and aesthetic, but at the same time they are more expensive and harder to clean.

If there is more than one cat in the house, it is recommended always to have at least two litter boxes to avoid getting the house dirty.

Warning: there exists cats that during a long but effective learning process, they learn to use the toilet just as we do and even some can flush it themselves.
