Rinotracheitis - Rhinotracheitis in Cats

Disease caused by the most severe of the two most common viruses responsible of what is known as cat´ superior respiratory disease. The other disease is calicivirus. This virus called herpes virus 1 affects the superior respiratory via (nose, eyes, throat and sinuses area). The most common way of infection is through direct contact with another sick animal.

Symptoms: Young and old animals are the most affected. Some symptoms are fever, sneezing, cough, high salivation, mucus-purulent nasal discharge, inflammation and cornea infection that produces tears and loss of appetite.

Prevention: By ways of a triple vaccine at the ages of 2 ½ and 3 months an annual vaccine. Also by separating sick individuals and disinfecting equipment and facilities.

Treatment: Basically a supporting treatment using antibiotics such as ampiciline or tilosina to fight related diseases. Against ocular infection, apply some eye drops or ophthalmologic cream with tetracycline or aureomicine, but without cortical.
