How to teach your cat to use stop signs

A lot of cat owners let their cats out during the day, but not at night. This is done to avoid the cat from getting run over by a car. If you and your family have decided that you want to block the cat door at night, you will have to teach your cat that it's door will be blocked. Telling the cat that the door does not work will have no effect. Even though humans are able to tell when a door is blocked, cats can't, and worse yet, the cat might get confused as to why it can sometimes go through its door while other times it can't.

In order to avoid your cat from going crazy with this situation, it's recommended to use some type of signal. A cat is able to learn by association and this can help in trying to teach it that with a certain sign or signal that it is not allowed to go out. There are different types of things that you can leave at the cat door to teach it when the door is off limits. One idea is to put a small towel over its door or a piece of wood on top of it. You will see how the cat very quickly learns that this sign means that it cannot go through. Just make sure to remove it whenever "off limits" is over, otherwise this training will have been in vain.
