How to Train Cat to use a Scratching Post - Cat Tree

Cats have a natural need to scratch at things in order to keep their nails trimmed and sharp. Scratching is also one of the ways that cats communicate with other cats. Most cats have a knack for scratching at tree trunks when they are outside, but if your cat never leaves the house or is still too young to go out, it's important you provide it with something it can scratch at. One idea is to get your cat a scratching post. There are many different types of scratching posts to pick from. Or you prefer, you can also use a log of wood with the bark still on it. Cats really enjoy standing on their hind legs while sharpening their nails, so make sure that the scratching post or branch you get your cat is tall enough so that the cat can stand up and stretch while it scratches. It will be easier if you start out by buying a bigger scratching post so that it is still useful to the kitten or cat when it has grown more. Or if you prefer, start by buying one appropriate for the cat's size and then later get another taller one for when the cat has grown.
