How to Take the Temperature of a Cat
The normal temperature of a cat ranges between 38.1 and 39.2ºC. The nervous agitation and the physical exercise increase the body temperature, as also the excess of environmental heat and infections. A temperature below the above mentioned can be due to a cold environment, but also to a shock.
Take note of your cat's normal temperature when calm. (When it is possible, use a digital thermometer, it is precise and easy to read).
- If you use a crystal thermometer, shake it downwards, apply at the end a hydro soluble lubricant and, with a small rotation movement, introduce it two centimeters in the rectum of the cat.
- Hold the thermometer and the tail of the cat during 90 seconds. Later take it out, clean the end and proceed with its reading. Disinfect the thermometer always after its use.
- Do not take the temperature through the mouth
- Do not take these if your intentions produce much discomfort to the animal.
