How to Put Bandages on a Cat

Bandages keep the wounds clean and protected from greater injuries, including the self-inflicted wounds when biting or licking themselves in excess. Bandages also avoid them from swallowing humors that the wound secretes. The smooth and constant pressure that exerts aid to control the pain and the hemorrhages. However, the cats that are conscious are practically impossible to bandage, since its rejection is immediate. If it is necessary to do it, look for professional help. Next, and more by reasons of information than practical reasons, exhibit some bandaging techniques as first aid.

General technique of bandage

  1. After cleaning, disinfecting and drying the wound, place an absorbent dressing on the affected zone.
  2. Beginning by one of the edges, seal the wound with gauze so that the dressing does not move.
  3. Once it is bandaged, hold the end of the gauze with a hand to prevent the displacement and apply a first piece of sticking plaster in this specific area. Continue applying the sticking plaster, but extend beyond both ends of the bandage so that it covers some of hair and it can hold itself better. This helps to tighten and fix the bandage, preventing it from moving. One should not use elastic bandages, since they could cut the blood circulation and cause serious injuries.
  4. Keep the bandage clean and dry. If it is necessary, cover it when your cat uses the hygienic recipient. Do not allow it to moisten.
  5. Do not have it put for too much time, because it increases the risk of infections, or necrosis tissue.
  6. The bending wounds have a high risk of infection. If a wound starts to swell or suppurate, go to the Vet's office immediately, and take off the bandage if the wound smells bad.
  7. Keep the cat in the house until he is completely healthy and the bandage has been taken off. Do not make him exercise or play too active games while with a bandage.
  8. If he licks the bandage or tries to take it off, ask the veterinarian for an Elizabethan plastic necklace, that the animal will have to wear until the bandages are taken off him.
