How to Give Cardiopulmonary Revival (CPR) to Cat

The artificial breathing (mouth to nose) and the cardiac massage are two technologies applied to save lives that, used together, receives the name of cardiopulmonary revival (CPR). If your cat does not breathe and the heart does not beat, give him CPR. In order for that to be effective, the cardiac massage must be administered rhythmically along with the artificial breathing.

Do not try to use this procedure until you are sure of the fact that the cat is unconscious and that he is going to die. If you do so it will not help him.

(Even if you have the best set of instruments and the medical equipment required, it is possible that it'll be difficult to restore the pulse and the breathing of a feline. If he has suffered an internal massive hemorrhage, for example, it is practically impossible. If you are not successful, do not feel guilty for it).

Artificial Respiration: If your cat has stopped breathing, do the following things:

  • Lay the cat sideward. Keep the respiratory airways clear eliminating any rest or strange body, and pull his tongue out.
  • Close the cat's mouth. Surrounding the snout with the hand, cover the nose with your mouth and blow until you see that the chest swells up by itself.
  • Retire the mouth and let that the lungs go flat. Repeat the procedure to a pace from 20 to 30 times per minute.
  • Take the pulse every 10 seconds to insure that the heart continues beating.
  • If it does not beat, apply him a cardiac massage along with the artificial breathing.
  • Try to get professional attention from a veterinary as soon as possible.

Cardiac massage: Look for the beats of the heart or the pulse. Press its gums and observe if the blood comes back to the pressed area on having withdrawn the finger. If the heart of the cat has stopped:

  1. Lay the cat sideward, if it is possible with the head lower than the rest of the body. Take with a hand the chest behind the elbows, taking him between the thumb and the rest of the fingers. Put another hand in the loin.
  2. Press firmly the thorax, compressing toward the neck. Be energetic, but without being rough. Do not worry if you hurt or injure the cat, it is a case of life or death.
  3. Repeat the action of pumping to a pace of 100 times per minute, quickly and firmly
  4. Apply a cardiac massage during 15 seconds, and then give artificial breathing during another 10 seconds.
  5. Look for the pulse, then continue applying the cardiac massage until the heart starts beating again, and then center squarely in the artificial breathing.
  6. Get veterinary attention as soon as possible.

CPR done by one person

  • Give cardiac massage during 15 seconds.
  • Make the breathing mouth to nose during other 10 seconds.
  • Continue until the pulse and the breathing are back
  • Support shelter to the cat and look for a veterinarian immediately.

CPR done by two people

  • A person gives cardiac massage during 10 seconds.
  • Later, another person gives air two times in the nose of the feline.
  • The procedure is repeated cyclically
  • When the heart starts beating again, it is continued only by the artificial breathing.

CPR done by three or more peoples: The first person gives the cardiac massage, the second one does the artificial breathing, and the third one makes the artificial breath. (By lifting the fourth backs and pressing the groins more blood will come to the brain, part where it is more needed).
