Getting Cat Used to Household Objects

Cats need to learn to get used to objects, images, sounds and odors that do not exist in nature. Imagine what it is like for a kitten to face a vacuum cleaner, a blender, or worse yet, children! Cats need to face these things right away so that they learn to not be afraid of these things. Usually small kittens are more accepting of new things and are not as fearful of them. So this is the best age to train and expose your cat to these things. You will probably notice that instead of being afraid, kittens enjoy exploring everything around them. Which brings us to another point; make sure to be careful with what your kitten gets into so that it does not hurt itself. Make sure to always keep an eye on your kitten when it proceeds to explore the house or the garden.

Strange sights: Try to imagine how unusual and strange it must be for a kitten to see its owner drying his or her hair, or using this huge object to suck up the dirt from the floor. It's no wonder kittens run off when they see something like this for the first time. Your kitten might take some time to discover that these things are not going to hurt them and learn to ignore them.

Tip: Whenever you see that your kitten is afraid of something, don't grab or hold it to relieve its fear, rather let it build up some courage toward the object it is afraid of (as long as the object is not dangerous), and after that praise the kitten by petting it.

Strange sounds: Cats naturally have very keen hearing. Therefore, sometimes a small noise might be overwhelming to them. Your cat will need some time to get used to hearing these sounds within its new home. We don't really realize it but a normal house is full of noises like the telephone, television, radio, music, talking etc. The best thing to do is to let the cat be around these noises little by little and frequently until it gets used to it.

Strange odors: Besides having an incredible hearing sense, cat's sense of smell is also very strong. In nature this sense allows them to recognize the members of their family. So it's important that you expose your kitten to an array of different smells by letting many different people handle and pet it. This will also help the kitten not be afraid of people when it grows into adulthood. Ask your family and friends to give you a hand with this.
