Children and Cats
It is not a good idea to bring a cat to a house where there are small children. It would be different of the cat was already there when the baby is born. In these cases, if you continue to pay attention to the cat, the animal usually adapts very well to the new situation.
Small children have to be taught the basic rules on how to treat cats; for example, that they always have to get near to a cat in a frontal manner, never from behind or from above; they have to know, when a cat doesn't want to keep on playing and that he wants to take a nap, they must leave him alone, an, overall, they have to be aware of how dangerous their claws are and to understand that they don't only unsheathe them when in anger, but also when playing.
A golden rule is always to maintain the face far from their claws reach.
There must be a series of basic and unmovable rules of where can a cat go and where not, like for example, no to let them go into the kitchen or into the bedroom, climbing on tables, etc.
Other animals
To bring a cat home where you already have other animals can create serious problems, although you can avoid them if you give priority to the rights of the oldest over that of the new animal and to give all an equal care.
Newly arrived cats don't take very long to adapt themselves to a house and to establish its own relations of friendship. Although, it is important, however, to procure them with a secure place to which they can withdraw when feeling pressed by any other animal of the house.
