Cat Whelping

The difficulties to give birth can be to weakness of the contractions of the mother or an abnormal fetus. The cats of advanced age and with overweight are those who have more probabilities of suffering weak contractions. On their part, the immature cats could abandon her litter.

Has the childbirth not begun after 66 days of pregnancy?
Has not begun after the rectal temperature goes 24 hours below 37.8ºC? Has not begun after an hour since the first viteline sack appeared?
Has the puppy not born after 45 minutes of strong contractions?
Has passed more than two hours without the following one is born?.  YES
Phone the veterinarian for advice.

Has he lost a lot of blood of red intense color during whelping? YES
Go to the veterinarian  NOW.

Abundant hemorrhage during the pregnancy?
Abort (expulsion of embryos or tissues? Suppurations Brown or yellowish and of disagreeable smell during whelping?   YES
Go to the veterinarian the same day.

General weakness of the mother?   YES
Phone the veterinarian for advice.
Continue with the childbirth in house.

If a kitten has remained clogged in the channel.

1. Take him softly using a clean and warm towel
2. Pulling firmly each time that the mother has a contraction. Taking care, and of gradual form, facilitate his expulsion pulling in arch toward the heels of the mother until the kitty goes out totally.
3. If you do not get it go out, go to the veterinarian immediately.

If the mother does not demonstrate interest for the kitty

1. Put the newborn kitten in a clean and warm towel
2. Retire with the towel the membranes that surround his head and then those of the body, accumulating them about the umbilical cord (neither cut the cord do not even pull it).
3. After wiping the fluid of the face of the kitten, rub the body vigorously with the towel to stimulate the breathing.
4. If he does not start breathing immediately, put him to bed in the towel and take him in the hands, doing a glass with it. Raising them to the height of the shoulders, balance him downwards rapidly several times, describing an arch, until he expels the liquid of the respiratory way.
5. Return again to rub vigorously to the kitty with the towel. Stop doing it when he breathes, cry or move actively.
6. Returned him to his mother. If she does not show desires to attend to him, put in touch with her veterinarian. (If the mother does not cut the placenta with the teeth, place a thread around of each umbilical cord to approximately two centimeters of the abdomen of the kittens. Cut the thread leaving the thread in the part connected to the kitty).

• Do not disturb the mother during normal whelping.
• Do not allow strangers' visits.
• Do not move the mother in any moment during whelping if it develops with normality.
• If he needs lighting, do not use too bright lights.
• Take care with the umbilical cords, especially in case of cats of long hair. A dry cord can round accidentally around one of the extremities of the kitty and act as a turnstile. Be sure that they are cut.
