Cat Thirst Increase

The increase of the thirst can be a sign of that something goes badly -specially in the old cats- so an attentive owner must observe if the cat drinks more of accustomed. In a beginning, the cats were animals that were living in the desert, so that normally they have a few necessity of liquid thanks to the efficiency of their kidneys. They can drink a bit more in warm stations, but they are too intelligent to get work and avoid the heat being looked a fresh and shaded place to rest; for it they do not have to drink abundant -like the dogs- do it to replace the lost liquid and to be kept fresh. There are other occasions for those that it is possible to wait that they drink more; for example, at the end of the pregnancy or when a female is producing to her kitties. Also the thirst of a cat can increase if you left to him to affect to the salty food, like bacon and fried potatoes, or if he asking the neighbors for food or looking for it in the buckets of garbage. But it is not necessary to believing that the cat has thirsty because he drinks a lot of milk. If he needs liquid, he drinks water. The milk is not very good for the cats, though they can get affecting to it if you are given it.

In case the cat drinks in excess, it can be a logical motive of health. The acute vomits and the diarrhea produce an extreme dehydration. The corporal fluids that get lost for wounds and accidental burns, must replace them drinking. Exist a great variety of medicines that can produce increase of thirst, though in this case the veterinarian will advise us to have always the pot water pot of the cat full as part of the therapy.

If there is no a logical explanation of why our cat is drinking more of the normal thing, it is necessary to consult without delay the veterinarian, especially if it is also urinating in excess. Before the visit, it is very useful to measure how much drinks the cat. It is necessary to fill and refill the water bowl with a small labeled pitcher for 24 hours and to measure then what stays: the difference is the quantity that the cat has drunk. To make it better, it is preferable to have the cat in house the whole day. It is clear that the cat can drink from another site (place) or there can be other cats that use the same container, so we will have to take the necessary precautions. The cats are in the habit of drinking from the lavatory so that it is necessary to have the lowered lid (snack). Also it is useful to take a sample of urine to analyze it. One of the most frequent reasons of increase of thirst in the old cats is a renal chronic ailment: the cat has a watery urine because the kidneys already him(her) do not work; other symptoms are the loss of weight, the evil I breathe and sores in the mouth. There are other possible reasons: a disease of the liver (very frequent in the old cats), the hiper thyroidism caused by a tumor in the gland thyroid, ell cancer (especially in the lymphatic system) and the diabetes mellitus. For the diagnosis, probably there will be necessary to do test of blood and of urine, X-ray and ultrasound scans: later, the veterinarian will indicate the appropriate treatment.
