Why Cats Rest and Sleep So Much

Two thirds of a cat's life is dedicated to sleeping, which is approximately twice the time an average mammal sleeps.

The need for sleeping varies throughout the cat's life, being the young and elder cats the ones who sleep the most while adult ones sleep less. At the beginning, cats have a very light sleep period in which they keep some of their muscles tense, but after ten or thirty minutes sleep becomes heavier and their eyes start to shut down. Finally they get into a profound, deep sleep letting their nervous system regenerate totally.

It is not recommended to interrupt cats while resting hours, unless they have the bad habit of prowling all night. If this is the case you must not let the cat sleep during day hours. By doing this you will avoid being affected by the prowling of this animal during your sleep hours.

Urine drizzle: Urine drizzle is different from the act of urinating because urine drizzle is motivated by the need of the cat to mark its territory and it is completely normal to do so.

It is common for cats not castrated and cats that share a property with other animals to spray its urine on vertical surfaces as a way of identifying and limiting their territory.

To restrict the visits to the breeding grounds will help control the problem. If a cat sees another cat, its immediate reaction will be to put limits to its territory, so it is important to change routines and habits to motivate the drizzle of urine.

There has to be a feeding routine besides other chores during breeding periods. It also helps to apply some chemical products on places were the cat usually sprays its urine. For this, a wide range of products can be found. A good example is "Feliway " an anxiety reliever that helps reduce urine drizzles.

A taste for high places: The taste for high places could mean that heights are a sign of status. That means that if a cat controls the highest place while in the breeding ground it will be considered the dominant animal.

It is also thought that higher places give anxious or nervous cats security and tranquility beside the possibility to observe every activity going on in its domains.
