Purring original function is to allow kittens tell their mother everything is alright while being fed. Kittens cannot meow and be fed at the same time, but they can be fed and purr simultaneously and without any trouble.

Cats continue purring when adults as a way of transmitting other animals or people a sense of happiness and well-being.
