Cat Nutrition

Cats have their olfactory system very developed for what is said to be very sybaritic. If they get used to eating a certain type of food, it will be difficult to change it for another one in the future.

Cats by nature, are felines and therefore hunters, so they start ingesting food at four weeks of age, but as a domestic cat, it can be delayed until six weeks.

The consistency of the food is also important. Fundamentally, it should by dry. Occasionally, you can also give them caned food, which is softer or when they have to take some medication, but it is not recommendable to dampen their food o have it always damped.

Every day nutritionists elaborate specific food for every age and physiological condition.

Some guides for their nutrition
Some parameters exist to correctly feed your cat. For example:

  • Where you place their food plate, cannot be a transited area, so they feel comfortable. You cannot put their plate of food by their litter tray.
  • Two bowls are needed with a solid base so it doesn't knock them. Must be cleaned daily and placed over a mat so it doesn't spill over the floor.
  • Cats like fresh food and water. It is better to put small amounts through out the day, than putting large amounts.
  • The feeding system cats have is eating during short periods and repeat this several times a day. This is the most normal and suitable thing for a cat.
  • Because of their hunting instinct, casts like their food temperature higher.
  • Don't be surprised if it eats herbs or plants that we have at home. Their purgative action makes them regurgitate, if it needs to; any hair balls or remain of food. We can make sure there hasn't been used fertilizers nor herbicides in these plants since cats can be very sensitive to these toxins.
  • If a cat suffer from anorexia, bulimia or frequent vomiting, it is a symptom that something is failing. Take it to the veterinarian because it could be incubating some disease or suffer from some gastric problem.
  • We can find in the market varieties of food according to the age and type of cat: gelded cats, pregnant cats, constipated cats, cats with some dermatologic problem, cats with sensitive appetite, or digestive problems, skinny cats, etc.
