Cat Litter tray

The litter tray is the place where a cat must learn where to urinate or defecate while being at home. Cats, being very clean animals and deep rooted instinct, with complete certainty , will get used to using this without any problem. In case of kittens, while they remain in the litter, it is the mother who helps them by provoking a certain stimulus that makes them urinate and defecate. We hardly see the excrement during that time; the mother takes care of cleaning everything.

Once weaned, when they come home, they need a secure and calm place to eliminate. We will put it in a place where there are no congested areas and that has ventilation. Since they like to scratch themselves in the sand after they have gotten it dirty, the tray has to be big enough to fit the whole cat. The ideal thing is to use a small or medium one in their short age and of low edges so they can enter easily and then go on to bigger trays with higher edges so they don't get dirty everything around.

The tray must be plastic or fiber glass that allows it to be washed and disinfected; which has to be done periodic and with some good detergent. It is also recommendable to clean once in a while with some alcohol to disinfected well.

Cleanliness is fundamental to prevent first; the cat from feeling displeasure and starts defecating around the house and second; not to allow that unnecessary infections should be produced due to the remains of organic matter, especially in the warm months. Don't forget this detail; it is important that the litter box is always dry and the cleanest possible because if not, the cat will do his needs in another place like for example flowerpots.

Cats are very intelligent for this kind of things and they learn quickly, usually the cat teaches the kittens how to use it, if not you will have to do it. After every meal, place them in the litter box and show them how to dig, they will understand immediately.

If the cat doesn't use the litter box, it can be because:

  • It is dirty or humid.
  • It can have worn problems
  • Have problems of incontinence due to some urinary infection, kidney stones or others that force him to do several times and in small quantities, if this happens consult with your veterinarian
