Cat Diabetic Crisis: Excessive insulin, deficient Insulin.

A diabetic crisis can happen on having injected not enough insulin or excessive to a diabetic cat. Both are high risk emergencies. If they are not treated, they can go into coma and to a fast death.

Excessive insulin: Is the cat being injected insulin every day, and from two to eight hours after having the last shot it still has some of these symptoms?:

  • Weakness
  • Disorientation
  • Marked changes of conduct
  • Coma
  • Hypoglycemic crisis (low levels of sugar in blood) YES

Give him orally. Go to the veterinarian NOW

If the cat is diabetic, have always at hand glucose or honey in case an emergency takes place on having injected him too much insulin. A solution of sugary water does the same functions.

  • To the first symptom of an overdose of insulin, with the consequent descent of sugar in the blood, inject liquid glucose into the mouth of the feline.
  • If he has convulsions, raise his lips and smear the gums with glucose syrup.
  • Since it can be only the beginning of a hypoglycemic crisis (low levels of
  • sugar in blood), go immediately to the veterinarian (He can give him glucose directly through intravenous way)

Insufficient insulin: Does the cat drink water in excess? Does he eat well but loses weight? Is he weak and low? YES
Possibly he is diabetic. Go to the veterinarian within 24 hours

Has the cat some of these symptoms?:

  • Vomits.
  • Sweet, fruity smell in the breath
  • Coma YES

Hyperglycemic crisis (diabetic or not), means high levels of sugar in the blood.
