Though cats have reputation of being relatively independent, the domestic cat need the fondness and the attention of their owner, as all pets. Among the essential cares, it is necessary to provide them with:

  • A balanced diet, which provide food for cats of high quality, as a regular supply of fresh water.
  • The habitual cleanliness of their litter tray. It is necessary to prevent diseases.
  • It is necessary to cut their nails often. To anticipate any damages in the furniture, it is necessary to facilitate them with a scraper, preferably of a rough material.
  • Cats use their tongue to clean their coating and normally swallow all loose hair.

For that, all cats, including those of short hair, must be brushed weekly to withdraw all loose hair which helps prevent the formation of ball hairs in their stomach. Some of the long haired cats need to be brushed daily so their hair wont get tangled.

When you buy a new cat, among the most important things you should do for your new companion to feel at home is:

  • Allow the cat to investigate the house with freedom, so it doesn't fell scared and hide in a corner and it wont want to come out for awhile.
  • Hide the cables of domestic appliances, protect the controls of the kitchen, withdraw the utensils that cut and put objects of high value in high places until they are educated not touch them.
  • Be very careful with cleaning or toxic products.
  • Protect your favorite plants with a metallic fabric or put them on a high place until you know if they are toxic or not for the feline.
