Cat Breeds

There exist forty varieties of breeds for domestic cats in the whole world and though they are very different in the size of their tails or general aspect, they vary very little in size. The smallest breeds weigh approximately from 4 to 7 pounds as an adult and a bigger breed go from 15 to 20 pounds.

The origin of breeds: The global beginning of breeds is difficult to precise. Many domestic breeds like the blue Russian and Siamese were originated as a natural variety of domestic cats specific of a geographical area. Others as the Himalayan are breeds created as a result of a litter during generations.

Some relatively new breeds, as the Rex (of curled hair), Sphinx (without hair), Scottish Fold (with double ears) and the American Curl (with covered curled hair), appeared from a genetic mutation and were developed as different breeds through a selective litter.

Qualification in competitions: The qualification is determined by the Owners' Association of Domestic Cats and varies according to the appreciation that disposes each of them. For every breed, exists a model of perfection, with ideal characteristics and those known as faults that in a cat exhibition could be a motive for penalties or disqualification. Every model of breed defers slightly from one organization to another one and not all recognize the totality of breeds.
