Cat Baths

Cats are not friends with water. The most normal thing is for them to put resistance for what is necessary to accustom them to the water from an early age. If they are adults, it will be difficult to bathe them.

Products we use for their hair must be specifically for cats. We cannot use the same as ours, since it can alter their ph of their skin and provoke alterations that predispose it, with the continued use, to dermatological problems. With a lot more interest we will use special products if we are dealing with some pathology. If a anti fleas shampoo is already been used, do not apply anything anti fleas after.

Previous recommendations

  • The best place is the tub or a lavatory; fill the bottom with warm water, close to their corporal temperature and we will let them stand on four legs so they don't get too scared.
  • Try to hold on to them, but not forcing it too much, so they wont scratch us and run away. Start wetting them little by little with the hand and with the help of a sponge, we will bathe them softly and without letting go of them.
  • Do not use the shower or hair dryer the first time because if so, it will be the last time to use them. We need a towel close by to dry them as soon as possible.
  • If it is not too scared, once dry we can brush their hair a little.
  • Never leave them wet, not unless it is summer and the weather allows them to dry quickly.

Necessary material

  • A pair of gloves
  • A bucket or tub to bathe it
  • Cat shampoo
  • A couple of plush towels
  • Hair dryer
  • A Comb or brush

Process

  • Fill the tub or bucket with water at 38 degrees. The water must not reach more then the neck, if not it will think it is drowning and will run away.
  • Apply the shampoo especially for cats.
  • With a little jar, wet cat from neck down, not the face, so shampoo doesn't get in their eyes.
  • Use ear plugs to avoid water going in them. If the cat accumulates dampness, it can suffer from fungus in the ears.
  • Leave in the shampoo for a couple of minutes, no more.
  • Rinse very well to avoid any allergic reaction.
  • Be quick. Once rinsed, grab the towel and dry the cat. If you are to bathe him during winter, make sure it a place that it is not cold.
  • Finish with the hair dryer. Use warm air and place it 20 centimeters distance from their body. If it is the first time using it, allow the cat to familiarize with it and little by little get it closer by. A lot of them get scared by the sound.
