What is Calicivirosis and Cats

A world-wide disease produced by a calicivirus that attacks the higher aerial openings (nose, windpipe, larynx, and lungs included). It can be transmitted in a direct way that is, from infected animals to healthy ones, or in an indirect way - through air.

Symptoms: In its most mild form, ulcerations are produced in the epithelium of the tongue, hard palate and the nasal junctions. Ocular discharge may appear and afterwards there might be vesicles that break or cells that die and degenerate the tissues. The most virulent stalks produce pneumonia, acute alveolar edema and purulent bronchial display. Besides, it can also produce chronic gingivitis.

Prevention: Via a triple vaccine at the ages of 2 ½ and 3 months and an annual vaccine. Also by separating sick individuals and disinfecting facilities.

Treatment: Give a supporting treatment by using antibiotics to fight the associated diseases.

It is recommended to use nasal decongestant to maintain respiratory via clear. One must keep the animal calm and in a mild atmosphere.
