A visit to the breeder

After finding a good breeder, one must visit him with anticipation to know more about the breeds he offers to sell, and to observe the way in which he manages his business, besides observing the condition of his equipment, facilities, etc. Facilities and equipment must be clean showing clearly how the business is being run.

It is recommended to establish a good relation with the breeder, he is a unvaluable guide in ways of breeding and handling a breeding nursery.

Some of the most frequently asked questions one initially asks the breeder are:

  • Which of the broods is the dominant one?
  • Which need special handling?
  • Which are the most curious?
  • What kind of problems are common to this breed?
  • What type of temper characterizes this breed?
  • What type of nourishment do they need?.

Election of the exemplary: Before buying, one has to have in mind several factors. One must not buy on impulse, nor trying to save money. It is fundamental that physical conformation of the chosen exemplary match the "standards of the breed".

One thing one has to observe first in potential candidates, is their health condition. Sick animals or wounded ones will not fulfill requirements to be an adequate reproducer and will increase cost of maintenance.

Likewise, one has to ask for the parents pedigree (at least one of them has to have won a title) and verify their physical characteristics and behavior.

Behavior Cats have to be alert , curious and not afraid of strangers. They must answer to a call and after a short introduction, allow to be pet.

Looks: Cats must walk free of problems, without limping signs, with a straight upward tail and its face up. Body must be free of bumps and injuries, specially near the navel or groin. The annul must be relatively clean and free of pink or pale brown color discharges. Cats genitals must also be clean and free of discharges.

All cats must have 6 or 8 small nipples of a pale pink color; if not in a breast feeding stage. The ideal fur coat is the one that is clean and shiny, free of external parasites and bad smells.

They must have 5 fingers on the front feet and 4 fingers on the rear feet, nails must not have incrustations. Eyes must be clean and shiny, free of clouds and discharges. Cats must be clean and free of discharges; a cat that scratches itself often, might have mites.

The nose must be lightly humid, cold to touch and free of discharges; a hot nose is a symptom that the cat has fever and is sick. The mouth is usually pink, without any cover on the tongue, and it must be free of wounds and bumps. Teeth have to be white and clean, without excessive crust; likewise, they have to be strong and complete.
