Dog Accidents - Canine Accident
Every case of dog accidents presents its own problems, but it is positive to follow a certain set of useful and practical rules in any situation, which doesn't mean that you don't need to call a veterinarian.
- Until you know the nature of the cause all of the injury and the intensity, keep the animal on his side, without him moving, and with his head to the level of the floor.
- If the animal is in complete state of shock, you must keep his head a little lower than the level of his body.
- If because of vomits or mouth hemorrhage the animal is in danger all of sucking in blood or substances that were thrown out in the vomiting, and they ease his head to a side always at the same level of the body. You have to remove the collar and leash in order to keep the air passage free.
- if the dog presents dyspnea or a lack of breathing due to a thorax injury, keep the animal with the thorax and head semi-raised.
- Well someone has gone to look for the vet, you must proceed to examine the animal in search for hemorrhages, signs of asphyxiation, bone fractures or state of shock (fast and weak pulse. Hypothermia, bewilderment and sometimes unconsciousness)
- Going on is of importance, you will proceed to stop the hemorrhage and, if he does not breathe, to practice mouth-to-mouth resuscitation . In case of bone fractures, don't move him without having taken the necessary precautions. Make sure he is not in shock, because sometimes it doesn't happen until later.
- Calm the animal if he is nervous, frightened or in pain. Do not treat him brutally.
- Do not touch open wounds or burns with your hands or objects unless you do not have at your disposal sterile bandages. In that case, use clean and washed objects like handkerchiefs, pieces of sheets, etc. and if you're on the street and you have no other element, break the lower part of your shirt (the cleanest part) and use those pieces.
- If the animal is unconscious, you should never administer any liquid or solid substance by the mouth, much less anything with alcohol. In the same way if he is semi-unconscious, and he might vomit and, when he tries to breathe, he might also swallow some of the material he has just puked out, which might produce an infection or of structure and in the respiratory passages, with the danger of asphyxia or even death.
- In case of a bone fracture you should never move him until the injury has been totally paralyzed. In cases of traffic accidents, where one does not know where the bone fracture is, what you have to do is simply slide of board or hard element softly under the body of the dog; the board must not be flexible and it must be bigger than the body of the dog, including the head and tail.
- Until the professional arrives, keep the animal at normal body temperature.
- Don't try to medicate your animal on your own. And although your dog may not seem to need a revision, take him for a check-up. Many serious reactions can come about later. Always talk to your veterinarian.
